I am sure that you have all heard, by now, that Jack Thompson has refused to pay the promised $10,000 to charity. Even after the game modding group Fighting Hellfish created a GTA mod loosely based on Mr. Thompson's proposal. Now, the fact that he didn't pony up the cash is not at all surprising, did ANYONE expect him to pay? The larger issue is the fact that he would offer a deal like that with the express intention of welshing out, I believe that is called False Representation, and I'm no lawyer, but Jack is, and he should know better. What I have been able to discern is that offering payment for services rendered counts as a contract, written or verbal, if the services are rendered, and they were, then the soliciting party is required to pay. Since Jacko did not pay, that constitutes as a breach of contract, if not theft. What is worse is that he insulted, not only the people who made the game, but gamers in general, stating, "I'm not interested and won't be commenting on the mod. The satirical piece entitled 'A Modest Video Game Proposal' was intended to highlight the patent hypocrisy and recklessness exhibited by the video game industry's willingness to target cops, women, homosexuals, and other groups with some of their violent games. To be fair, though, you can't expect a bunch of gamers to understand the satire if they think that Jonathon Swift, the author of 'A Modest Proposal,' is the name of a new Nike running shoe..."(quote obtained from GamePolitics.com), misspelling Jonathan Swifts name in the process. To add further insult to injury, good 'ol Jack has not only contacted the creative minds behind Penny-Arcade! This saddens me greatly, to see a supposed adult, revert to the maturity level of a grade schooler when someone not only disagrees with him, but offers rebuttals that are well founded and thought through. I know many of you have expressed hatered for this man, thats fine, just don't let it get to you, I don't hate him, nor do I fear him, I PITY HIM. |
